Favourites set off with wins at Women's U23 Worlds

Hosts Slovenia, here celebrating together with their mascot, the Ljubljana dragon, dominated the attention on the opening day of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship with their solid win over Argentina.

Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 10, 2017 - All top favourites opened with wins Sunday here at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship, but it was with varying degrees of difficulty, which promises an exciting week of action ahead.

In Pool A, at Arena Stozice, hosts Slovenia and Asian powerhouse China enjoy a perfect record after sweeping Argentina and Thailand respectively, while three-time medallists Dominican Republic are also on full points following their hard-earned win over a sensational Egypt in six sets.

In Pool B, meanwhile, at Hala Tivoli, Brazil opened the defence of their title with a crushing 4-0 win over Kenya, but Turkey are close on their heels with their own sweep of Cuba in straight sets. Bulgaria wrapped up the day in Tivoli outlasting Japan in six very tight sets.

All matches in Ljubljana are played under a new scoring system currently being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.

Competition continues Monday at both competition halls in the Slovenian capital, with focus on the closing matches of the day between undefeated sides, Slovenia v Dominican Republic and Brazil v Turkey.
