Drussyla: Brazilian volleyball's Neymar

Drussyla Costa leads Brazil as captain of the squad at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship in Ljubljana.

Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 13, 2017 - Brazil's new volleyball sensation, outside hitter Drussyla Costa, has been going from strength to strength in her short but already very promising career.

She had already picked up several team and individual awards in age-group competitions before establishing herself on the starting lineup of Brazil Superleague champions Rexona Sesc Rio de Janeiro in this year's playoffs and then carrying Brazil to triumph at the 2017 FIVB World Grand Prix.

In addition, she had also won a silver a medal at the 2012 FIVB Beach Volleyball U21 World Championship in Halifax with teammate Rebecca Cavalcante.

But now, firmly established in the indoor discipline, she's dreaming, like most athletes, of the highest possible achievement: "I have one dream," she says. "And it's to win a gold medal at the Olympic Games."

"And this kind of competition [the 2017 FIVB Women's U23 World Championship] is very important in building up experience to eventually live the dream."

Drussyla is currently captaining Brazil at the 2017 FIVB Women's U23 World Championship here, leading her side to three wins in as many matches in the first part of pool play - but she says she doesn't feel any extra pressure in her role as leader.

Brazil may have been sailing through pool play so far in Ljubljana, dropping just one set in their three opening matches, but there doesn't seem to be an complacency from the part of the defending champions. "This championship is very balanced," said Drussyla. "We still need to keep our feet firmly on the ground."

But whatever the outcome, there's excitement in the Brazil camp about the prospects of Drussyla, with the team doctor Marcus Vinicius summing it all up quite nicely: "Drussyla is very special. She's volleyball's Neymar."
