Slovenia and Brazil set pace at Women's U23 Worlds

 

Brazil are the only team not to have dropped a set yet at after two rounds of play at the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship in Ljubljana.

Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 11, 2017 - Slovenia in Pool A and Brazil in Pool B lead the race for tickets to the semifinals of the 2017 FIVB Volleyball Women's U23 World Championship after both scored decisive wins here on Monday and together with China and Bulgaria remain undefeated and on full points after two rounds of pool play.

Hosts Slovenia impressed once again as they outlasted two-time medallists the Dominican Republic in five sets and China also scored their first win - in six, against a sensational Egypt who eventually were physically overwhelmed. In other Pool A action at Arena Stozice in the Slovenian capital, Thailand overcame Argentina in six for their first victory in the tournament.

Over at Hala Tivoli, meanwhile, Brazil got in two tough sets and then sailed past Turkey in the next two to remain the only team amongst the twelve participants not to have dropped a set yet. Bulgaria are also undefeated in Pool B after shutting out Kenya 4-0 while Japan registered their first win in straight sets over Cuba.



All matches in Ljubljana are played under a new scoring system currently being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.




Competition continues Tuesday at both competition halls and something will have to give when the two undefeated teams of Pool A, Slovenia and China clash to close the day.
