Brazil clebrate sweep of Kenya in the 2017 FIVB Women's U23 World Championship opener in Ljubljana.
Ljubljana, Slovenia, September 10, 2017 – In Sunday’s opening match of Pool B at 2017 FIVB Women’s U23 World Championship, reigning champions Brazil thundered past Kenya in straight sets (15-2, 15-5, 15-12, 15-10) at Sportna Dvorana Tivolo hall in Ljubljana. The young Kenyans found no solutions to stop the outstanding South American offense.
Captain Drussyla contributed eleven points to Brazil’s win while Yvone Sinaida was top scorer for Kenya with five kills.
All matches in Ljubljana are played under a
new scoring system currently being tested: a best-of-seven, 15-point set format.
The favourites from Brazil quickly took command of the match in the opening set. The South American side put a lot of pressure on the Kenyan passers who did not manage to set up an effective offensive game. It was a quick affair in the new 15-point set format as Brazil showed no mercy, rushing to an undisputed 15-2 (!) first set win.
The young Africans nourished hope in the beginning of the second set (4-4). However, they were not consistent enough. The reigning champions rapidly raised the speed and power to end the second period 15-5 in their favour.
Kenya had their best moments in the third set (10-10). Still, the story of the match did not change much in the third and fourth set as Brazil never looked back (15-12, 15-10).
